About this project
Do you know the daily intricacies of how sand and gravel get transported to a construction site? Neither did I. But for construction companies, it’s a highly detailed, back-and-forth process that demands precision and efficiency. That’s where Tread comes in—offering an all-in-one solution to streamline construction material transportation.
Our team laid the foundation for Tread’s product, transforming manual logistics into a tech-driven experience. We designed a system that caters to multiple user personas—dispatchers, drivers, and managers—ensuring effective workflows, real-time updates, and customizable features tailored to industry needs. By prioritizing efficiency and accessibility, our design helped modernize an essential yet traditionally overlooked aspect of construction operations, making it faster, smarter, and easier to manage.

What made this project unique was how niche and traditional the construction logistics industry remains. When I asked Tread about their biggest competitors, I was surprised when they pointed to whiteboards and Excel spreadsheets.
While many aspects of construction have been automated, material transportation management remains largely outdated, relying on a fragmented, manual processes.

Dispatchers: Spend the say assigning and managing jobs, finds tracking assignments to be most difficult when there is a large fleet
Managers: Needs to make sure the right information is being recorded, especially for billing. But it can be hard getting a hold of the right people and correct errors in recording.
Driver: Has used pen and paper for his entire career and doesn’t really see the value in using the Tread app.
Dispatchers: have a great relationship with the drivers but communication can still be a struggle with such a large fleet.
Billing: hassle when a discrepancy comes up after payment has been issued. Bilen makes sure the right information is being recorded, but it can be hard getting a hold of the right people.

For a 3-month design engagement, we wanted to make sure our design would be making the most impact towards the Tread product. We focused on optimizing the dispatcher experience, as they serve as the core manager of the entire workflow. By improving how dispatchers manage and assign jobs, we laid the groundwork for a more efficient system that could extend to a mobile driver app.
Our approach ensured that the most critical experiences were refined first, setting the stage for a scalable, user-friendly platform.

Working closely with the Tread team, we were able to access daily workflow interview recordings firsthand of multiple personas and understand how a user interacts with similar products in the industry.
We suggested new user flows for each key persona—dispatchers, drivers, and managers.

understanding of a dispatcher’s daily responsibilities, challenges, and workarounds. Observing how they managed job assignments, communicated with drivers, and tracked deliveries allowed us to pinpoint areas where technology could reduce friction and improve efficiency.
To design a system that felt both intuitive and transformative, we took a research-first approach, mapping out user flows for each key persona—dispatchers, drivers, and managers.

Dynamic order tracking
While a managers work is focused on creating and managing projects, there are often times where a company's manager and dispatcher is the same person, which creates the need to track order progress for a project.
The expanded view gives managers a quick and easy access to track assigned orders without leaving the table view. The map feature allows dispatchers to see driver locations in real time.

Modular order creation
We designed a modular system that allows users to add multiple orders within a project without disrupting their workflow. A pop-up module allows a streamlined workflow without excessive navigation.

Customizable filters and table
In construction logistics, no two companies operate the same way. Different teams, roles, and workflows demand different ways of viewing and managing data, so we designed a customizable filtering system that allows users to tailor the main table view to their specific needs.
Users can add, remove, or adjust filters based on the data points most relevant to their work. The column customization allows users to rearrange and toggle visibility for key fields, creating a system that adapts to them rather than the other way around.

In the Dispatch Assignment view, users can quickly review assignment details, allocate new jobs, and adjust existing schedules.
This view allows dispatchers to stay on top of real-time updates while also planning and scheduling tasks for the future, ensuring a smoother, more organized workflow.

Flexible job assignment view
We designed a system that allows dispatchers to assign jobs in two key ways:
Quick Selection – Choose a driver from a dropdown list and immediately assign them to a specific job. (see design above)
Drag-and-Drop Scheduling – In a dedicated driver view, dispatchers can see a driver’s full timeline and simply drag and drop assignments into available time slots.
We designed a system that allows dispatchers to assign jobs in two key ways:
Quick Selection – Dispatchers can choose a driver from a dropdown list and immediately assign them to a specific job. This is useful for rapid task allocation when time is critical.
Drag-and-Drop Scheduling – In a dedicated scheduling view, dispatchers can see a driver’s full timeline and simply drag and drop assignments into available time slots. This visual approach ensures that workloads are evenly distributed and scheduling conflicts are minimized.
With these two assignment methods, dispatchers can efficiently balance real-time job allocation with long-term scheduling, keeping operations running smoothly.

The live map view allows dispatchers to monitor active jobs and track driver locations to quickly assess availability and adjust schedules as needed.
This improves communication and reduces ambiguity in an order's progress, allowing dispatchers to be more proactive in their day to day workflows.

After refining the dispatcher view, the Tread team requested for us to design for the foreman’s workflow, ensuring on-site weigh-ins and scale-outs are recorded correctly.
This provides a real-time snapshot of incoming and outgoing trucks, enabling foremen to check in vehicles, verify loads, and ensure accurate scaling without unnecessary back-and-forth.

Similar to the create project modal, this pop-up ensures that users can efficiently check in trucks without navigating away from their main workflow.
This minimizes disruptions, enhances speed, accuracy, and ease of use in high-traffic job sites. Additionally, this allows for accuracy of ticket recording, in turn creating less discrepancies for billing.

Our work with Tread helped bridge the gap between traditional, manual workflows and a modern digital system. By creating intuitive tools for key users, we established a scalable foundation that allows for streamlined material transportation. Improving operational efficiency and billing accuracy.
This project helped reinforce the importance of designing for specific user needs—where adaptability, real-time insights, and usability drive success. We learned how to transform pen-and-paper processes into the right digital experience that can simplify complex workflows and encourage technology adoption.
